VISION 2008 in Stuttgart, Germany is an international trade fair for machine vision and identification technologies. During the twenty years that it has been running, it has become the meeting-point for the machine vision industry.

FireWire Zoom Cameras

I am delighted to announce that we have just published the following press release:

Bremen, Germany (April 24, 2008) - The Imaging Source, an international industrial camera manufacturer and software application developer, announces a new line of cost effective FireWire VGA and XVGA zoom cameras. Their specifications are a 4.8 - 46 mm motor zoom lens auto iris and one push auto focus. Zoom and focus are set by stepper motors, thus all adjustments can be reproduced. The iris is driven by a fast linear Hall element. An external trigger input is provided to capture images on demand. All cameras functions are software controlled and can be either set manually or automatically via an easy-to-use interface. The cameras ship with an extremely robust and stable, cast aluminum casting and with the SDK (software developer kit) “IC Imaging Control” and end-user application “IC Capture” to control the camera, display and save singular images, image sequences and image streams.

Optionally, the cameras can be equipped with a ring light system specifically designed for The Imaging Source cameras. The ring light can be powered by the camera and be controlled via a software interface.

FireWire Cameras: What is DCAM / IIDC?

DCAM is a protocol that describes the exchange of data with IEEE 1394 cameras. It has been initiated by the working group IIDC of the 1394 Trade Association and is being constantly refined. IIDC stands for “Instrumentation & Industrial Digital Camera”.

In contrast to the AV/C (Audio Video Control) protocol - widely used in the world of multimedia - DCAM defines the transmission of uncompressed video streams via the asynchronous channel of the IEEE 1394 bus. The transmission of audio is not provided.

However, DCAM does not only define the video stream provided by the camera but also the camera‘s parametrization (for instance brightness, shutter, white balance, etc…).

Software: What is Direct X?

Nowadays, we consider it completely normal that when we install a new word processing program that we do not have to tell the computer what type of mouse we are using. However, as those of us who remember the first mice under DOS, will know that then this was certainly not the case. Only once APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) for device classes at operating system level were introduced was the separation of applications software and hardware possible.

Put in simple terms, DirectX is the umbrella term for a number of APIs that describe audio and video data streams under Windows. Since Windows 98, DirectX has established itself as a standard for multimedia orientated image processing. Using this technology, any image acquisition software product can work together with any multimedia camera, for example.

Metrology orientated image processing, on the other hand, is known for its lack of standards: Most software packages only work with a small selection
of frame grabbers, which in turn, only work with a limited number of cameras. Do not forget, our goal is to “merely” get the contents of the CCD chip (that is in fact a memory chip) into the main memory of the computer.

As of version 8, DirectX does actually offer APIs that fulfill these requirements. The APIs for image streams are brought together in Windows under the name of DirectShow. So that any image creating hardware (for example, FireWire cameras) is recognized by DirectShow, it is necessary that a so-called WDM stream class driver is available (WDM = Windows Driver Model).
